It is very important to stop your dog from jumping when your puppy is young; however, it is possible to train an older dog to stop dog jumping.  A dog jumping up on people may seem harmless; however, it can be dangerous if the person your dog is jumping on is a lot smaller than your dog, such as a toddler.  The good news is it is fairly a simple process to stop dog jumping.

Why Dogs Jump

A puppy jumping up on people can be a nuisance.  You can stop this behavior by understanding why they jump in the first place.  Once you understand the reasons, you can implement techniques to stop dog jumping.  There are three main reasons why they will jump, these are:

  • Showing Dominance
  • Greeting People
  • Unknowingly Rewarded

If they are trying to show dominance, they are trying to show you that they are the pack leader.  If this is the reason, then you must stop dog jumping immediately.   You must show your dog who is in charge, and that is you.

Sometimes you unknowingly reward your dog to jump on people.  When they greet you with a jump and you are happy to see them, they think this is okay to do.  When you take them for a walk directly after they have greeted you with a jump, then they associate this jump with a positive outcome.

Method #1 – Turn your Body Away and Ignore

Once you notice your dog is about to launch, turn your body away from him.  Your dog will miss you.  Do not make eye contact or say a word to him.  Ignoring your dog will show your dog that when he jumps, he doesn’t get any attention from you.  Once your dog has settled down and has stopped jumping around, you can talk to him.  Go down to his level and give him a lot of love.

Method #2 – Instruct your Dog to Sit

If your dog is prone to jumping, give him the sit command.  Maintain eye contact with him if you use this method because you are giving him a command, not attention.  The reward will come once he sits, and you are ready to give him attention.

Method # 3 – Use a Leash and a Friend

This method can be used with a simple collar, a leash, and a friend that the dog likes.   Some people use a pinch collar; however, this is not recommended and generally not necessary.    This process involves having your friend walk up to the dog while you are holding his leash.  Perform the following steps:

  • Have your friend stand a few feet away.
  • Tell your dog to sit.
  • Once your dog sits, have your friend move toward your dog.
  • Your dog will probably get up and move toward your friend.
  • Once your dog gets up, have your friend stop immediately and turn away from your dog.
  • You will command your dog to sit.
  • Once your dog sits, have your friend turn toward the dog and move towards him.
  • If he gets up, have your friend stop immediately and turn away from the dog again.

Generally, after about two to three tries, you can stop giving the “sit” command.   They will finally figure out that in order for the person to approach, he will have to sit.

It is possible to train your dog to greet people politely.  Using the above methods, your dog jumping up on people will no longer be an issue.  You only need some patience and a lot of love to stop dog jumping.
